Tsutomu Tannowa was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1951. After graduating from Waseda University, he joined Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals (now Mitsui Chemicals) in 1976. For several years from 1980, he participated in the construction project of a petrochemical complex in Algeria. In 1998, Tannowa became the Director of the Administration Department of Omuta Works, and in 2000, the Manager of Human Resources at the Head Office. Following a two year from 2005 as the General Manager of Industrial Chemicals Division, Tannowa became the Executive Officer and General Manager of Human Resources & Employee Relations Division in 2007. In 2010, he became the Managing Executive Officer and President of the Basic Chemicals Business Sector. Tannowa was responsible for overseeing all major business operations from 2012, and in 2013, as the Senior Managing Executive Officer, he became one of the moving forces in restructuring the company’s business operations and creating the company’s new Mid-Term Business Plan. In April 2014, Tannowa was appointed as the President & CEO and Representative Director at Mitsui Chemicals. In May 2018, he assumed an office of the Chairman of Japan Chemical Industry Association. His interests include tennis and the traditional game of Go.
