Hak Cheol (H.C.) Shin

LG Chem Chief Executive Officer

Born in Cheongju, Korea in 1957, Mr. Hak Cheol (H.C.) Shin received his 
bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University in 1979. 
He began his professional career as an engineer at Poongsan Corporation in Korea. Then, Mr. Shin made a bold career shift and joined 3M Korea in 
business development, rising through the ranks to Group Manager. 
In 1995, his work extended overseas when he was appointed CEO of 3M 
Philippines. After a successful stint in Southeast Asia, Mr. Shin joined the 3M team at headquarters as the Business Director. In Minnesota, he headed several divisions and eventually became Executive Vice President in 2006. In 2017, Mr. Shin was appointed Vice Chairman and EVP of 3M’s R&D, Supply Chain, Business Transformation/IT, Business Development. 
After a career spanning over three decades at 3M, he was appointed CEO and Vice Chairman of LG Chem in January of 2019. In December of 2020, he successfully led the spin-off of LG Chem’s battery division, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of LG Chem, under the name LG Energy Solution, and was appointed chairman of the board. 
Mr. Shin has also led the charge in sustainability efforts within the company. 
During a speech he gave at the World Economic Forum in January of 2021, he stated, “Our 2050 goal calls for a reduction of 30 million tons of carbon dioxide on an annual basis by 2050. We deployed ‘avoid, reduce and compensate’ tactics.”
